Aspiring Emirati designers will not want to miss the Sharjah Bridal Fair next month. New to the schedule is the Young Fashion Awards 2016, a competition that is open to female UAE citizens under the age of 25. It targets budding designers in three categories ready-to-wear, wedding abayas and kaftans and dresses. The judging panel of industry experts which will be unveiled soon will be on the lookout' for originality, functionality and commercial viability in the collections put forward. Cash prizes range from Dh5,000 to Dh6,500, and the winners will be announced during a ceremony on May 22. Entries, including images of the work, must be submitted to the organisers by Saturday. Strict rules apply in all categories for ready-to-wear, for example, applicants must have a label that is newly established, with two seasons under its belt. In the wedding abaya section, the competition is exclusively open to Emirati women who are fashion students or recent graduates. Hopefuls are required to submit a bridal gown that incorporates a shayla. In the kaftan and dress category, any nationality can enter, and all creations must be suitably glamorous for parties and wedding ceremonies. About 100 exhibitors, spanning the categories of bridal wear, jewellery, abayas, henna, food and honeymoons are expected to fill the stands at the fair this year.
